Oral history interview with Chris Kermiet, an American square dance caller, dancer, choreographer, and educator. Kermiet was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1946 to Paul Kermiet and Pauline Kermiet (nèe Ritchie) and the family moved to Lookout Mountain near Golden, Colorado when he was five months old. Paul Kermiet was also a square dance caller, and Pauline, who was from Kentucky, was a folk singer and member of "The Singing Ritchies," a 14-family-member performing group. Paul and Pauline ran the "Lighted Lantern" square dance camp on Lookout Mountain, beginning in 1948, when Chris was two years old. Chris began calling dances while he was a music student at the University of Colorado. In addition to square dances, he also calls contras, Appalachian big dance circles, English Country Dances, and celtic céilidhs (a traditional Gaelic social gathering).
